Geocache Description:

The first in an occasional series of war-related caches in Aberdeen

When Norway and Denmark fell to the Nazis in May 1940, seaborne invasion via the coasts of the northern UK became a serious and distinct possibility. A series of defensive measures were there taken to protect the coastline from invasion and impede an enemy's movement inland. Concrete anti-tank blocks were placed along the coast which would cause tanks to expose their vulnerable undersides as they tried to cross then, barbed wire was laid along the sands and pillboxes built. Several major anti-tank stop-lines were also built at particularly vulnerable points. These defences were placed at strategic locations, at roads, rivers and railway crossing points.

An inexpensive alternative to building new pillboxes was to adapt existing walls with loophole firing positions. A loopholed wall with four gun loops is still to be seen in the boundary wall of Aberdeen's Duthie Park at the junction of the Great Southern Road and Riverside Road which would have allowed defensive firing along King George VI bridge, a possible entry point into the city.

There are 4 loophoes in the wall over a 4.3m distance measuring from 0.2 to 0.23m square and situated just over 1m off the ground.

Duthie Park, one of Aberdeen City Council's gardens is currently undergoing major redevelopment. Originally donated to the city in 1880 by Miss Duthie it consists of 44 acres and includes a bandstand, fountains, ponds, statues and the Winter Gardens, which contains many exotic plants including the largest collection of cacti in Britain. The gardens are currently undergoing a major restoration as part of the Parks for People programme funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
