Geocache Description:

Printmaker, Hester Cox has created a series of geo art caches that take the seeker on a journey through Hackfall Wood with each cache illustrating a story of one of the many creatures that live there and leaving the visitor with a book of impressions from their day.

Fisher: Kingfisher

Tale:
Fisher is another name given to the Kingfisher a bird well known for its incredibly bright iridescent feathers. In fact, the bright plumage may well give the king fisher its name because its looks make it the king of all fishers.
The kingfisher is particularly important in Greek mythology. It may well be linked to the halcyon which was a very brightly coloured bird that the Greeks believed could control the ocean. It would do so for seven days before the winter solstice and seven days afterwards during which time the sea was totally calm and the halcyon was able to brood her eggs in a nest made from fish bones that floated on the surface. It is from this myth that Shakespeare and the poets derived the term ‘halcyon days’ to describe times of happiness, calm and tranquillity. There is actually a part of the myth that is related to fact because the Mediterranean is invariably calm around the time of the winter solstice and kingfishers’ nests are tunnels in riverbanks which are always littered with fish bones from their dinners!

Hackfall:
Kingfishers are often seen along the Ure at Hackfall. You might see them briefly as a bright blue flash when they are darting up and down stream or, if you are very lucky, you may catch one perched on a branch where they will sit motionless as the water’s edge watching for fish. Their fishing abilities are fantastic and adults with a hungry brood can catch up to 115 fish in a day. Unfortunately, despite being such a beautiful bird, their nests can get really smelly and dirty as they deposit half-digested fish bones and bird droppings there.
