Geocache Description:

This cache is located at Hellroaring Reservoir. A tribal conservation permit may be required for some. There are two different ways to access this cache. You can drive all the way to the reservoir on B3000. The turn off to B3000 is located approximately 5.6 miles from the hwy 93, hwy 35 intersection. A high clearance car should be able to drive all the way to the reservoir most of the year depending on snow depth and spring run off.

This cache can also be accesses from Hellroarding road if you like to hike or bike. Hellroaring Road is just before the 4 mile mile marker on Hwy 35. The road to the reservoir is about a mile up Hellroarding Road and is gated most of the time but there is room to park at the gate, a car should be able to get to the gate without problems. It is approximately 1.2 miles from the gate to the cache and it is mostly uphill, but the last half mile of the trip if fairly flat. This way in takes you along the creek that drains out of the reservoir.

Hellroaring Dam was built around 1914 to provide electricity for a flour mill in Polson; it also provided flood control and irrigation water for the Polson area. The owner of the flour mill built the dam and its power plant to provide electricity for his mill. The day after the power plant was completed the owner of the mill turned on the power switch and the mill caught fire and burned down. The owner then sold the power to Polson for its lights. It eventually became part of the Flathead Indian Irrigation and Power Project. (information from a local new paper article)

The deterioration of the 40-acre reservoir proposed a danger to public safety so it had to be stabilized until reconstruct of the dam is possible so the area has gone thru some changes lately. In my opinion the changes are for the better, the area is more beautiful than ever.

Don't forget to bring your fishing poles! Once again, permit may be required.

The cache is about the diamiter of a 35 mm film canister but not as deap and is camo'd. The GPS signal is a little bouncy but I think the coords are within 10 feet. If you are able to get a better reading please let me know and I will update
