Geocache Description:

A short multi in central Bath where ( IN THE SPRING AND EARLY SUMMER ) you can observe nesting Perigrine Falcons before heading off to see the splendid St Johns church close up and log your trip.

CONGRATS Mr and Mrs O on your second FTF this week. Bet you will be singing and dancing !!!

At the posted coordinates, you can look across the river to St John's Church. On the side of the steeple facing the river ( at the level of the belfry vents ) you should be able to spy a nest box. In the spring and summer you can also hear and see the activies of a pair of nesting Perigrines and hopefully their new brood.

Often you will also find people here with telescopes and they will usually be only to happy to let you look. If you have binoculars or a scope, why not bring them along to (just in case). There are many local watchers and the cache is not just here so no need to worry about muggles or looking suspicious.  Sometimes along the river path ( look upstream from the nearby bridge) there are people from RSPB and they are also willing to tell you more. Check on RSPB website for more details. In July the young usually leave the nest but if you are lucky you may still see the birds as they stay in the area a lot of the time. Best time of year to see them is of course in the spring from March onwards.

Once you have finished looking at the birds, look at the minature spires that surround the main spire on the church, They are multi sided and running up each of the ridges in their slopes are a series of stone "knobbles" ( that is not a real architectural word, but you will know what i mean ). Count the Knobbles on any one ridge. X. Also count the number of these mini spires Y, and the number of complete stone diamond patterens immediately below the nesting area. Z ( Note that X>Y+Z )

Now use it to find the next location to view from .

N 51 22.X( Z-3 ) (Y-Z) W002 21.ZY(X-2)

Now enjoy the stroll to the second location, it is quite close by as the Falcon flies! But alas not for the likes of you. You will probably need a sit down afterwards so I have laid everything on for you. In front of you there is a clock, How many windows are beside it, A. There is also a rose window, How many smaller windows below it, B. In the section of roof right in front of you, How many Triangular roof lights, C.

Finally, once rested head off to GZ N51 22.X(Z-B)A W002 21.B(C-Z)(Y+A) you may find something interesting "posted" there. You can get another view of the nest boxes and sometimes there are bulletin sheets, telling of the chicks progress, on the railings.
