Geocache Description:

A quick cache on the edge of Caesar's Camp on Wimbledon Common. This is the second cache in the British Sitcom series.

Up Pompeii was broadcast from 1969-70, and although Frankie Howerd starred as a Roman slave, the humour was very British. As one would expect from the 'Carry On' writer, Talbot Rothwell, this series was full of double entendres and risque gags, with Howerd's Lurcio central to most of these.

The series was recorded in front of a live studio audience, with whom the cast interacted. Howerd's performance was characterised by addressing himself directly to the camera and littering his monologues with anachronistic comments and verbal tics such as "Oooh, no missus". Another feature of his humour was to feign innocence about his obvious and risqué double entendres while mockingly censuring the audience for finding them funny - "Titter ye not".

Thirteen 30-minute episodes were made, in two series. In addition there was a pilot episode (1969) and two special episodes entitled Further Up Pompeii, one in 1975 and the other in 1991. The latter sparked speculation that there could be a new series, but Howerd's death in 1992 put an end to any such prospect.

Back to reality, the cache is on the edge of a Roman fort from the 3rd Century BC. The fort was surrounded by a circular earthwork (two ramparts and a ditch) about 300 yards in diameter. Its outline is difficult to follow but the footpath to the right of the metal gate near the cache passes through the middle of the fort. The easterly limit is marked by a stone plaque, and its westerly limit by a post 300 yards along the footpath. The fort is now part of the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club.
