"It's me, it's me...it's Ernest T.!" Though he appeared in only a handful of episodes, Ernest T. Bass is one of the best-remembered characters on The Andy Griffith Show. Find his .50-caliber ammo box hidden near his favorite spot, Mitchell Hill Lake.
To reach the lake, please hike from the Horine parking area or from the Welcome Center on Mitchell Hill Road. Waypoint coordinates for the Welcome Center and Horine parking are listed below. The nice people at the center provided a friendly reminder that Rayhill Road near the lake is not open for public parking.
Roaming the hills of Jefferson Memorial Forest, Ernest is still upset over the rejection of his marriage proposal to Charlene Darling. To make matters worse, his former friend in the area, Gus, a fun guy, has passed away--see Having Fun with Gus.
Lonely and lovelorn, Ernest T. often invokes one of his favorite pastimes to get attention, throwing rocks to startle happy people that cross his path. He keeps his stash of rocks in an ammo box, a "gift" from the army officer who declared Ernest unfit for military service. He has attached notes to each of his "purdy" rocks and says, "You can admire 'em, but leave my rocks in my box" when you're looking for the log to sign. And make sure to replace and re-hide it so that the sheriff and his good-fer-nuthin' deputy don't see it.
Deputy Barney Fife declares, "He's a nut," and has authorized you to perform a "citizen's arrest" if you can capture Ernest T. in the act. After logging the cache, join Barney's Brigade to "nip it in the bud" and reform Ernest T. before he does any more harm. Help him realize his potential as a contributing member of society, a school crossing guard.
To become an official brigade member, just answer (via e-mail) the three trivia questions about the mischief-maker and your name will be included in the membership list on the cache page. This is not a requirement for logging the cache, just for fun.
