Geocache Description:

You Call This Archaeology? Henry Jones uttered those words to his son, Jr. otherwise known as Indiana during the third Indiana Jones movie. But do you know what archaeology is? This series will introduce you to some of the concepts and ideas in this field of study.

C in the field of archaeology can start many words, but at this location I would be remiss in not showing you two important C's in BC.
In front of you are what is known as a CMT, or culturally modified tree. CMT's can take many forms. These two trees which show the traditional triangular scar associated with stripping of bark for making of cedar bark fibre cloth, rope, or other uses. Other trees in BC might show use as kindling trees, where they were hacked at to start fires, or even canoe blanks, felled in the woods, and perhaps even started to be carved but for some reason abandoned to the forest.

If you are interested in all the types of culturally modified trees in BC and how to identify them, the government of BC offers a free PDF on their website. Culturally modified trees of British Columbia

Another important C word that is shown here is cultural resource management, the biggest field of archaeology and the one that 99% of the people that do archaeology are employed in. When some big project is undertaken, CRM work is needed in order to ensure that nothing with be destroyed. Here even with the logging nearby, and the creation of the new parking lot, these two trees still stand. Field studies might involve going out before a logging operation to look for CMT's that might be logged by accident otherwise. In other cases such as a mine or gravel pit CRM work might involve survey work and the digging of test pits to ensure that no buried sites are located at the location and could be accidently disturbed. One good example of this is that during the building of the new road for gravel trucks on this mountain, stone tools in the area of 3000 years old were uncovered.
