Geocache Description:

The cache is placed in the Mines of Spain along the Eagle Scout Trail.  As you reach the end of the trail, the trail makes a loop and comes back onto itself.  The cache is located off the end of the loop.  The trail can be slippery when wet and sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.

The cache is placed with the permission of the Iowa DNR.  It is located along the Eagle Scout (ES) Trail in the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area.  The park is open year around from 4 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

It is approximately a 6-mile round trip hike from the Cattese Hallow parking area to the end of the trail.  You will also have climbed approximately 800 feet, but not all at one time, during your hike.  (You will also have descended the same amount.)

To find the parking area, follow the Olde Massey road, off Highway 52 south, to the Cattese Hallow Access Area.

NATURAL CHARACTERISTICS:  The Mines of Spain Area was designated as one of Iowa's "watchable wildlife areas," and with good cause. Rare species, including the bobcat, red-shouldered hawk, flying squirrel and bald eagle have all been on the area.  In addition, the area is home to a large variety of songbirds, white-tailed deer, wild turkey and numerous small mammals.  With wetlands, creeks, forests, prairies, cropland, meadows and the Mississippi River, the Mines of Spain offers a wide variety of Iowa's natural world for those who take the time to look and listen.
