Geocache Description:

This is a small micro cache located about a 10 minute walk from the Homestead Trail Trailhead on Diamond Ridge Road. You can park in the trail parking area at the bottom on Rucksack Dr. and enjoy a short walk to the cache with great views. This cache should be accessible during most of the year except for times of very deep snow.

The Homestead Trail was formally created by the Kachemak Heritage Land Trust in the 1990's, partially through a conservation easement by a local land owner. The trail is on public easements, some of which are narrow so please stay on the trail near private residences. The trail is best known for it's spectacular views and gorgeous Kachemak country meadows that are carpeted with many beautiful flowers, especially the fireweed in mid-summer. Approximately 6.7 miles in length, it starts at the Rogers Loop Trailhead near the Sterling Highway and ends at Crossman Ridge where it then follows the old road back to the City of Homer Water Reservoir. Once known as one of Homer's best local trails, it has fallen into disrepair and needs attention -- mainly due to the spruce beetle outbreak of the late 1990's that decimated most of Homer's majestic white spruce trees. These trees continue to fall and there are over 40 trees down on the section between Diamond Ridge Road and Crossman Ridge. It remains followable, but be prepared to duck and dodge many tangles of dead trees. THE GOOD NEWS is this cache is located near the trailhead where no tree dodging is necessary and you can enjoy the great views and meadows. The cache is just off the trail, but in a great spot to enjoy the view and local flora. BE ADVISED one of the early trail signs may be down -- do not follow the 4-wheeler trail that goes toward the radio towers to the west. The trail is a single path that continues past a small cabin on the right.
