Die Steganographie ist die Kunst oder Wissenschaft der verborgenen Speicherung oder Übermittlung von Informationen in einem Trägermedium. Die Steganographie hat Geheimhaltung und Vertraulichkeit zum Ziel: Informationen werden so verborgen, dass einem Dritten neben den offensichtlichen Informationen des Trägermediums nichts auffällt. Damit ist zugleich erreicht, dass geheime Informationen nicht Dritten bekannt werden.
Das Funktionsprinzip der Steganographie beruht darauf, dass ein Außenstehender die Existenz der steganographierten Information nicht erkennt. Dadurch unterscheidet Steganographie sich von der Kryptographie, bei der ein Außenstehender zwar um die Existenz von Informationen weiß, aber aufgrund der Verschlüsselung nicht in der Lage ist, den Inhalt zu verstehen.
Eine Unterart der Steganographie ist die linguistischen Steganographie, bei welcher die Wörter der Nachricht nach einer schlüsselabhängigen Regel durch Synonyme ersetzt werden. Als Beispiel hierfür sei der im Mittelalter von Johannes Trithemius entwickelte Ave-Maria-Chiffre erwähnt, bei welchem 24 Bezeichnungen für Gott für 24 Buchstaben stehen. Das Bild rechts zeigt eine weiterentwickelte Variante bei welcher für jeden Buchstaben zwei Bezeichnungen stehen. Zum Beispiel steht die folgende Phrase

Steganography is the art and science of hidden storage or transmission of information within a carrying medium. The goal of steganography is secrecy and confidentiality: information is hidden in such a way that a third party doesn't recognize anything beside the obvious information. Thereby it is also achieved that the secret information is not disclosed to any third party.
The functional principle of steganography is based on the idea that an outsider doesn't even realize that steganographic information exists. In this way steganography differs from cryptography, where an outsider knows about the existence of information but is unable to understand the content due to the encryption.
A variant of steganography is the linguistic steganography where words of a message are replaced by synonyms based on a key-dependent rule. An example for this would be the Ave-Maria chiffre, which was developed by Johannes Trithemius in the Middle Age and where 24 names of God are translated into 24 letters. The picture on the right shows an improved variant where each letter is represented by two names of God. For example the following phrase
