The Coastal and Water Issues Committee of the Ecology Action Centre would like to thank everyone who attended our third annual CITO event. This year's event was the Saturday before Mother's Day, so we thought we would help Mother Nature by unclogging one of her arteries. We assisted the Sackville River Association to clean up a 1 km section of the Little Sackville River.
This one was a bit different from most CITOs because many cachers ended up a tad wet. That's right folks we went in the water. Not everyone went in obviously, but there some brave souls that hiked up their hip-waders and went strolling up the stream. There was a decent section of roadside and forest that was pretty well littered also so the event included child friendly pickup spots.
Over three tons of garbage was removed both from the river bed, banks and flood plain. This bit of urban river system hadn't been cleaned in the 20 year the history of the Sackville River Association. In the end, prizes were awarded for various waste management skills and on the whole fun was had by all.
If you are planning a reduced emission trip to the cache, there are 3 buses that can bring you within a 5 minute walk of ground zero; the 84 (Glendale), 85 (Downsview) and 87 (Downsview). Don't forget the "Trash Out" part of CITO, and try to grab something that doesn't belong anywhere you go.
