Geocache Description:


Come visit one of Bakersfield's most well known landmarks, the iconic Bakersfield Sign.

Bakersfield Sign Then & Now

CACHE LOCATION
There are a couple of different parking lots where you can park your car and walk over to the cache. There are No Parking signs up and down the street so please do not park there.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Constructed in 1949, the Bakersfield sign was located at the main entry point to the city on Union Ave which used to be the US 99. The sign was no longer being maintained by the Bakersfield Inn who had gone out of business, and in the late 90's the sign had to be taken down in fears of it collapsing. Needless to say, it was in bad shape and was planned to be demolished. A new sign was being constructed and on the 4th of July in 1999, it was installed at its new location over Sillect Ave, just off Buck Owens Blvd next to Buck Owen's Crystal Palace where it stands today.
