Geocache Description:

A quick hike up to Fortress Rock provides you with a spectacular view of the surrounding area, including BSA Camp Raymond, San Francisco Peaks and three different national forests.

From Camp Raymond, this is a quick hike to the top of Fortress Rock; a must-see for any scouters at summer camp. We made the hike once, and loved it. After visiting a couple of geocaches to the north, we decided that Raymond was grossly lacking in geocaching options, and Fortress Rock was the perfect spot. The hike is actually 2.5 miles round-trip from the Handicraft Lodge to the summit, and back. You can get a map from HQ (where you will need to fill out a form for permission to leave camp, if you are a scout troop). If you are not starting at Raymond, you can pick up the trail at one of the nearby Forest Service roads (FSR 527, I believe).  This is a great hike for after dinner to watch the sun set. For your safety, the cache is not located near the cliff or any other possibly dangerous location. Placed by scouts from Troops 885 & 988 as part of the Geocaching merit badge. The cache is a small clear plastic waterproof box, with exchange items. It will hold TBs and would be a great spot to exchange scout-related items like pins or patches.
