Geocache Description:

This cache is placed with permission from the National Trust and is the second of a short series. Figsbury Ring is designated as a biological site of Special Scientific Interest, although controversy exists as to its original function or functions. Although widely regarded as an Iron-Age Hill Fort, other theories also exist, largely due to its unusual inner ditch, suggesting that it may have been some form of Henge dating back to the Bronze or even Neolithic ages. Whatever the origins, Figsbury Ring can be a magical place to visit. There are wonderful views out to Salisbury and Salisbury Plain, with an abundance of birds, butterflies and chalk wildflowers to see at the right time of year, and space enough to enjoy the peace and tranquillity. Even in winter, when the biting winds howl across the banks, there can still be an awesome feeling, standing in the midst of wild, raw nature. Figsbury Ring was the inspiration for the author E.M. Forster (1970 – 1970) who based his novel “The Longest Journey” on the area. He renamed the Ring as “Cadbury Rings”, while the manor in Winterbourne Dauntsey, the village immediately below the Ring, became “Cadover” and the Winterbourne Valley became the “Cad” Valley. For sheer simple family enjoyment, Figsbury offers wide open spaces to roll down banks, play hide and seek, fly kites and run off energy, while adults can relax and enjoy the scenery and wildlife, listen to the bird song, paint, photograph and of course, walk the dog! There is an “official” car park attached to the site at N51⁰06.220, W01⁰43.650 which is approached via a badly rutted lane off the A30. Take great care not to leave valuables in the car, as sadly, like so many tourist spots, thieves do occasionally operate in the area. Alternatively, you could park below in the village of Winterbourne Dauntsey, at N51⁰06.513 W01⁰44.923 and enjoy the walk up the hill. Please take great care to replace the container exactly as found.
