Geocache Description:

Lake Martin is a popular weekend spot for residence in the capital city area, Birmingham area, and even some residence as far as Atlanta. Lake Martin is a 44,000-acre lake with over 750 miles of wooded shoreline. An artificial reservoir, Lake Martin was formed by the construction of Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River. The Martin Dam powerhouse is used to generate hydroelectric power for the Alabama Power Company. Construction was begun in 1923 and completed in 1926, creating what was then the largest man-made body of water in the world. The dam was renamed in 1936 in honor of Thomas Martin, the then-president of Alabama Power Company. Alabama Power and Russell Lands own the majority of the shoreline.

One of the most recognized landmarks of Lake Martin is the famous Chimney Rock. A rock face on an island in the middle of the lake, but there is something about this famous hangout spot that you might not know....

The Rock you are looking at is actually NOT Chimney Rock. It is in fact Acapulco Rock. Many people have gotten the two confused over the years and the wrong names have stuck.

Where is Chimney rock then? its on a nearby island and you can tell its Chimeny rock because well.. it resembles a chimney.

Since this is a man made lake and at this spot the water can be up to 30-40 feet deep, this would be a very tall rock if the lake was not here.

This area is a very popular place for sandstone. Sand stone looks like a bunch of sand compacted into rock form (hence the name sand stone). Sand Stone from this area has contributed to giving the Alabama coast its beautiful white sands (aka Sugar Sands) which you can learn about more in my other eartcache (GC3P33Z). The easiest way to tell if it is sand stone other than looking at it is to feel it. if you take a piece of it and rub it together, it will become sand right in the palm of your hand.

Limestone is also found in this area. Limestone is a very famous rock as it is used in many things. The Great Pryamids in Egypt outter layer is made of limestone. Limestone is also used in Cement, some forms of glass, paper, plastic, paint, sometimes toothpaste (gross), and many other things. a way to determine if it is limestone is to pour vinegar on it, there will be a chemical reaction which makes the vinegar fizz.

The Cache-
The coords take you to Acapulco rock (often refered to as Chimeny Rock). This is a very busy place during the summer time so if you dont want to stick out like a sore thumb i would recomend this one in the colder months, but it is avalaible at all times. The Rock is an iconic symbol to people in Alabama. Most everybody who is from the state knows about it. hundreds of people jump of it daily for a thrill seeking challenge, but be warned there have been some people who have ended up breaking bones, becoming paralyzed, and even dying from jumping off this rock. it is not for the faint of heart.

in order to log this cache send me an email with the answers to these questions-

3.what evidence of human activity do you see on the rock (you will know what im asking when you arrive at the coords)

4. (not required, but its appreciated) Post a picture of you or your team, but make sure it doesnt give anything away.
