A lovely walk along the cliffs of Doonagore Bay near Doolin, Co. Clare. This cliffs are part of the ancient riverbed sediments that created the Cliffs of Moher. This once was an estuary said to be as big in its time as the Mississippi delta today.
The walk from the parking area (trail head) takes about 30 minutes. Maybe quite a bit more if you take your time and peek over the cliff edge every now and again. But please be careful, especially with easterly winds coming from the inland. After about 10 to 15 minutes, a newly created gravel path leads directly onto the cliff edge (in a safe way) which opens up new fantastic views onto terraces on the shore below.
You might want to go to waypoint "Leave path here" first as not to be misguided and climb down the cliff face where it's really not necessary nor recommended. When approaching the cache, please be careful as the small river can get quite big depending on rainfall. Follow it down a bit before trying to cross it if the water level is up. Be careful with jumping across as the stones will be slippy when wet. Please only step on dry spots, as all the wet spots will be very slippy due to algae growth on them.
As for the cache itself, the coordinates are those nearby as you would not get accurate readings at the cache itself. Please tuck the container back in to the left as far as possible so that it is almost invisible.
I had to replace the cache container as it must have been taken by the sea. It is now secured with a fishing line and a heavy stone in front of the container. Please make sure they are always tied together and that the stone is in front of the container, and let me know if they aren't anymore - thanks! And please don't place any trackables inside, as there still is the risk of the sea taking the container.
Past this cache, you can go to the next cache (Doonagore Cliff). And then, the path leads higher and higher up until you come to the Cliffs themselves (if you want to go that far). But even just going up the hill that you can see all the way from the trailhead is worth the effort. The view along the cliffs is absolutely breathtaking. A perfect spot for a picknick!
You can use the path to go all the way to the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre and beyond to Liscannor (long walk!) though I would recommend to start from the Cliffs side (200m high while Doolin is at sea level).
