Geocache Description:

Cache is a camouflaged bison tube , placed next to track leading to memorial. Nearest parking along track above memorial, very rough but accessible with care or park behind restaurant and walk short distance to GZ and memorial.

This memorial is situated on St Hilary Common, just outside of Cowbridge. The memorial is inscribed: 1914-1918 To The Immortal Memory of Those Officers, N. C. Os and Men of The Glamorgan Yeomanry Who Fell in the Great War Raised in 1901, the Glamorgan Yeomanry was recruited throughout the county. The headquarters of its four squadrons being at Swansea, Bridgend, Cardiff and Pontypridd. The Regiment was to give up its horses in November, 1915 and in March of the following year went with other dismounted units to Egypt. Here much time was spent as part of the Suez Canal Defence Force. On 2 February, 1917 a merger took place between the Glamorgan, and also from Wales, the Pembrokeshire Yeomanry. In this way, a new battalion was added to the Welsh Regiment, its full title being 24th (Pembrokeshire and Glamorgan Yeomanry) Battalion, The Welsh Regiment. The Glamorgan Yeomanry is perpetuated in the present day Territorial Army, by (Glamorgan Yeomanry) Troop, 211 (South Wales) Battery Royal Artillery (Volunteers), who are based at Ty Llewellyn Territorial Army Centre.
