Geocache Description:

Shockey's Knob rises to 1,860 feet and is right at the border between Frederick (VA), Morgan (WV) and Berkeley (WV) Counties. The Tuscarora Trail runs nearby and the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) has recently built a nice shelter at the summit.

There are multiple ways to reach Shockey's Knob. Parking along Shockeysville Road and hiking the Tuscarora Trail north (an approximate 3-mile hike) is the route the cache took. Other options are to park at the south end of Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area, and hike the Mill Race Trail up to the Tuscarora (a route currently untested by the CO, but mentioned by the PATC), or to hike southbound on the Tuscarora Trail past High Rock from various access points to the north.

Once you near the summit of Shockey's Knob, look for the sign to Shockey's Knob Shelter. Follow the sign onto a white blazed trail that leads towards the top. The trail will bring you to this very nice shelter constructed by the PATC. Continue past the shelter (the sign near the shelter pointing to the spring will head you in the right direction) and follow your gps to the rock outcroppings that provide both an overlook and also the hiding spot for this cache.

A slight bit of climbing (down about 4 feet) is necessary to reach this cache, however nothing psycho is required. The cache — an ammo can — is tucked into a gap between the rocks. It is well hidden, but hopefully won't give seekers too much grief. Please replace exactly as found to prevent any muggling.

Cachers are reminded to be aware of their surroundings as well. The nearby shelter's log does mention poisonous snake and bear sightings. During hunting season, take proper precautions also; the Tuscarora Trail does pass through active hunting areas.

Enjoy and good luck in the search!
