Beach Volleyball:

London will be the fifth Olympics to feature beach volleyball..

Beach volleyball was introduced as a demonstration event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and has been an official Olympic sport since 1996 in Atlanta where Australian duo Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst won bronze.

Cook and Pottharst bettered that performance at the Sydney 2000 Games, clinching gold in front of a home crowd on iconic Bondi beach.

The sport has been dominated by the US and Brazil, who have claimed at least one gold or silver medal at every Games since Atlanta. Only Australia, through Cook and Pottharst, have beaten those two nations to a gold.

At the last tournament in Beijing in 2008, USA's Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser clinched men's gold while Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor made it a double for the US winning gold in the women's event. Cook and partner Tamsin Hinchley finished fourth.
