I always get a smile when I go by this nearby store. For Kohl in German means cabbage. As it turns out Kohl's was at first a food store chain started by Max Kohl in 1946. It wasn't until 1962 that the first department store was opened. The chain of stores started mainly in Wisconsin and grew out from there into Illinois and Indiana. The family business was eventually passed down to Herb Kohl the Senator from Wisconsin and owner of the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team. It was then sold to a group of investors in 1986 and continued to expand throughout the United States.
