Geocache Description:

A miniature bison situated on Spike Island, Widnes. It should be an easy find, but the presence of fishermen may make it difficult. Free parking is available at the entrance to the island, which leaves you a short walk to GZ.
Please BYOP.

On the 27th of May 1990, on a grassy knoll, near the muddy banks of the Mersey, opposite a cement factory, The Stone Roses held a huge outdoor gig. Nobody knew, but it was a gig that was to become etched in Rock/Pop history for all time. Spike Island was bursting at the seams to accommodate the 27,000 young people that turned up that day, many without tickets. The organisers were helpless to stop them entering the site by hook or by crook.
It marked the beginning of the "Madchester Music" of the 1990,s, and saw The Stone Roses move into the media spotlight.
It was a hugely ambitious gig and technically, on the day, there was massive problems with the sound system. The massed throngs were struggling to here the band properly but it did not prevent the event becoming legendary.
A new film has recently been made with the working title 'Spike Island', which uses the gig as its backdrop( filming recently took place on site much to the curiosity of the local dog walkers) and a documentary about that day is due to be aired before christmas.
On the 23rd of May 2012, The Stone Roses appeared in their first public concert since the reunion, at the Parr Hall in Warrington in front of less than 1000 people. The gig was only announced that afternoon and entry was free provided you brought along a Stone Roses CD, LP or Tour shirt.
At the time of the Spike Island concert, I lived just a few hundred metres from the venue, and clearly remember the atmosphere in Widnes town centre. The place was heaving ( buzzin man ! ) but the general feeling was one of happines and joy. It would be great to hear from anyone, either by this site or by e-mailing me, of any experiences from that day. Maybe you were there?
