Women of the World Series (WOW): Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, aka Mother Theresa
August 26, 1910 - September 5, 1997
Place of Birth:  Skopje","Former[ly] Uskup, a town in the Ottoman Empire."
  • For over 45 years, she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries. Her beatification by Pope John Paul II following her death gave her the title "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta".
  • Quote: “By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus.”[
  • She left home at age 18 to join the Sisters of Loreto as a missionary. She never again saw her mother or sister.
  • She took her first religious vows as a nun on 24 May 1931. At that time she chose to be named after Thérèse de Lisieux, the patron saint of missionaries, but because one nun in the convent had already chosen that name, Agnes opted for the Spanish spelling Teresa.[
