Geocache Description:

This cache is near the oilfield pump.
The cache container is a plastic case. Please bring your pen.

The Yabase oilfield began full producing oil in 1935. Akita Prefecture was producing the oil of 70% or more in Japan temporarily. The crude oil produced here was chiefly refined at the oil factory in the Tsutizaki in Akita City and the Funagawa in Oga City, and sent in various parts of Japan. Therefore, the oil factory in Tsutizaki was destructed by air raid on August 14, 1945 that was the day before the day of the end of the war, and 100 people or more died.

After the war, Teikoku Oil Co., Ltd. developed the Yabase oilfield. As a result, the amount of oil production reached 300,000 kiloliters the 1950's of a Japanese maximum scale in the annual output. But the amount of oil production declines rapidly after the 1965's, and a present amount of oil production doesn't reach as much as 10% at that time.

The oilwell pump that operates in various places in Akita City is still seen, and it recalls at that time. The oilfield pump is one of the primal scene of the Akita citizens.

　八橋油田は，1935年から本格的に産油を開始しました。一時は，秋田県は日本国内の70%以上を産油していました。ここで産出された原油は，主に秋田市土崎と男鹿市船川の製油所で精製されて，日本各地に送られました。そのため，終戦間際の1945年8月14日には，土崎の製油所が空襲を受け，100人以上の死者が出ました。
　戦後，八橋油田は帝国石油が開発を受け持ちました。その結果，昭和30年代には国内最大の年産30万キロリットルに達しました。しかし，昭和40年代以降その産油量は急激に衰退し，現在の産油量は当時の10％にも達しません。
　今でも秋田市の各地で稼働する油井ポンプが見られ，当時を偲ばせてくれます。油井ポンプは秋田市民の原風景の一つとも言えるでしょう。
