Geocache Description:

A quick cache and dash by a small layby. Contains westings for Quercus robur. You will need to bring a pen/pencil.

The English Elm is one of our taller trees often reaching 40m. The flowers come out before the leaves and are sterile. Regeneration is achieved by suckers from the rootstock. With the demise of the trees due to dutch elm disease we are now left with just these smaller sucker trees which are to small to host the beetles that carry the virus. The trees do not play host to a wide variety of insects but a lot of those that do feed on it are totally dependant and therefore just as vulnerable as the trees.
