Why do some of my tulips only sprout leaves? Some of my tulips only sprout leaves, Its almost like the bulbs maybe down to deep so only a couple leaves appear. I'm not sure I dont know much about flowers. Should I maybe when they are done flowering bring them closer to the surface? any advice with them would be greatly appreciated! Also do they spread? seems like I have more and more every year! As a general rule of thumb, flowering bulbs should be both planted and spaced by measuring 3 times the height of the bulb. That means a bulb that measures 2 inches high should be planted at a depth of 6 inches and spaced 6 inches from surrounding bulbs. When measuring planting depth, measure to the bottom of the bulb. So, most tulips should be planted so that they will have about 5 inches of soil above them. Watering the garden during the hot summer to keep annuals and other plants above the tulips alive. Tulips do much better when grown hot and dry during the summers. The second most common problem is not growing the leaves properly - cutting them off too early (before they yellow) or any number of things that stop the leaves from producing energy for the bulb to form a bud. Yes, in the fall, you can dig them up and replant them again...but no deeper than the recommend planting height. Also, feed your tulips some bone meal when re-planting.
