Background
Several people have wondered where the old 4WD track in Hale Conservation Park (from the loop track) goes if you keep going South. There is a walking trail up here, which is part of the Mt Lofty Trails series and continues all the way through to Warren Conservation Park and links to the Heysen Trail.
Parking
There’s limited parking at the entrance to Hale CP and the South end of Warren CP. You’re also able to access the trail from the Tower Track in Mt Crawford Forest.
The Link Trail
Follow the trail markers (which in places are few and far between) along the logical paths. There’s a confusing part between HL-South Para View and HL-The Rockery where you approach a gate (heading South) and it appears to be a dead-end – just follow the fence line to the left and you’ll see the next marker over the side fence.
The most difficult part of the trail is the bush section between HL-The Rockery and HL-Take a Break (you may want to take several breaks along here). It’s also the steepest.
We would consider this trail for experienced hikers, with elevation changes of over 100m. As usual, come prepared with suitable hiking boots, wet weather gear, sufficient water & snacks for a 4 hour hike (depending on your entry/exit route) one way.
NOTE: These conservation parks are closed on Fire Ban days.
This Cache
Continuing South from HL-South Para View, the trail follows the fence-line down to this cache. Take care, as sections of the track are very slippery along here, but generally, this is as good as it gets.
