Wright Square was laid out in 1733 and named in honor of the last Royal Governor of Georgia, Sir James Wright. Originally, the grave site of Chief Tomo-Chi-Chi, the Yamacraw chief who offered peace and cooperation with the settlers, occupied the center of the square. This was marked by Savannah's first monument. Later, a memorial to William Gordon was constructed which you see today. Still later, another memorial of simple granite stone was created in the southeast corner of the square to again honor the chief to whom the city owed its early safety and success.
