This is very close to an easy access to the Waiau for your dog to have a swim to cool off during the walk.
Beware, however, as the Waiau has didymo. So, if your dog does go for a swim, be sure that they are dry for 48 hours before going into any other river that doesn't have didymo. There is another lovely beech forest ahead, or you could continue on the main track.
