These caches are on some of the rural roads of Macoupin County. Enjoy the less traveled roads and see some unusual, interesting and historic places.
The cache has been placed in the Miles Station Cemetery
Established in 1866 this well kept rural Cemetery contains 146 graves. Many veterans from various branches of the service are buried here with one of the more notable being Major General Bushrod R. Johnson of the Confederate States of America.
Johnson was a West Point cadet and in 1840 graduated from the academy. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 3rd U.S. Infantry and fought in the Seminole War in Florida. During the Mexican War he was a commissary officer. After being accused of selling contraband goods in 1847 he was forced to resign and became a teacher at the Western Military Institute and the University of Nashville.
When the Civil War broke out, he entered the service as a colonel of engineers in the Tennessee Militia. This militia shortly after became a part of the Confederate States Army. Promoted to major general in May of 1864, Johnson served with the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee.
Following the War, he moved to Illinois and became a farmer. He died in Brighton Illinois, at the age of sixty-three on Sept 12, 1880.
In 1975 his remains were removed and he was ultimately laid to rest beside his wife Mary at the Old Nashville City Cemetery. Unfortunately, his coffin had deteriorated, and they couldn't find too much of his remains. So while the remains they could find were transferred, some of them remain in Illinois. Major General Bushrod Johnson has the unique distinction of actually being buried in two places.
A marker is located where the General's body was originally placed. It is about 70 feet from the lone Pine tree in the Southwest corner of the Cemetery.
Please be respectful of the surroundings.
