Greatland Reviewer: Hello:

This cache page has been archived due to the lack of response to one or more prior Reviewer Note(s) about issue(s) with the cache. If the owner would like to have the cache unarchived, please contact me through my profile as soon as possible before another cache gets placed nearby.

Geocache Description:

The Life of a Macadamia Nut

A Macadamia Nut Tree Farm

Macadamia nut trees seem to bloom off and on all year. Their flowers smell just divine and can really give you the feeling you've finally reached Hawaii! When the nut gets enough sugar content, it will fall from the tree where it is either picked up by hand or with specialized vacuuming equipment!

The Nut

Freshly fallen, it will be green, turning to black as it ages Peel the outer shell away to reveal the macadamia nut

One of the hardest nuts to crack! The actual edible nut!

While they can be eaten raw, they tend to cause some stomach problems eaten this way. We take the nuts before the final shell is cracked and place them in a casserole dish in the oven at 150° for 2 hours. Let cool and then crack and eat! If you want them salted, after they have been cracked, soak in salt water overnight, then back at 150° again for 2 hours!

Here's the trick to caching in Hawaii... pretend you are taking pictures (or take them)!! The majority of locals won't even notice you there if you are taking pictures and the ones that do will simply shake their head and mutter "Tourists, they'll take pictures of anything!" We have to have MINIMUM speed limits here because visitors tend to go too slow while looking at everything!

Includes a log book and pencil!
