Geocache Description:

The Cache is NOT at the posted location, but where else would you pick for a puzzle cache called Blue?
You will need to solve the puzzle below to find the actual cache coordinates. The cache is a small lock and lock, with room for only a few items.

This is the fifth of a series of easy, kid friendly caches based on the colors of light. Write down the codes contained in each cache to be able to find the series final. Each will have some relation to the color in the cache title and will contain two code numbers to be used in finding the series final - White - Color of Light, since white light is composed of all colors of light. Be sure to record these code numbers.

Blue is the color of the sky and deep water lakes or oceans. Blue is found elsewhere in nature as plants (cornflowers and blueberries), animals (some butterflies and frogs) and minerals (sapphires, cobalt compounds, etc.). From blue suits to blue jeans, it is a common clothing color. Blue light has a wavelength of 450 - 495 nm. To geocachers, however, blue means unknowns.



From puzzle caches to challenge caches or mysteries that don't quite fit within the other categories, a blue squiggly is a sure sign you will need to work for the cache.

Light travels in a straight line. When light hits a reflective surface, its angle of incidence (on the incoming ray) will be equal to the angle of reflection (on the reflected rays). These angles are usually defined from a perpendicular (or normal) to the mirror surface, but the angles between both the rays and the mirror surface are also equal, as shown schematically in the two figures below. This concept is called the Law of Reflection.






We have constructed 2 boxes, each containing many flat, smooth mirrors that are reflective on both sides. The first box is named North while, conveniently, the second box is named West. If you shine a laser light into each box, it will hit, in order, mirrors labelled with the cache coordinate digits before exiting the box. All you need to do is trace the path of the laser light, using the Law of Reflection. We have shown where the red laser light enters the boxes. You will need to extend this light all the way to the mirror surface. The other gap in the boxes is where the light exits.







Probably the easiest way to solve the puzzle is to print it out and draw the light paths in by hand. Use of a protractor is recommended. Answers can be checked below.
