Hill 490 (Roullingen) : the German position
Hill 490 between the Schumann crossroads and Roullingen was a German defensive position originally manned by the 57. Grenadierregiment of the 9. Volksgrenadierdivision, but it changed hand several times in the course of the battle. It blocked the access to the road leading into Wiltz.
Heavy combats took place in this area during the battle of the Schumann crossroads from December 27, 1944 until the liberation of Wiltz on January 21, 1945 by the 26th Infantry Division.
Lest we forget...
WP1:
-Have a look at the boards:
On December 29, 1944 which German Grenadier Battalion stayed in Berlé? ABC
On December 30, 1944, which hill could not be taken by companies E and F? DEF
On December 31, 1944 how many thousands of shells did the U.S. artillery fire? GH
Now go or drive to WP2:
N 49°D(C-B).GGF’ / E 5° H(A/B).BFE’
From here, take azimuth (F-G)(H+E)° for BDE meters to the final spot.
Don’t forget that you move in a former combat zone. Ordnance is still unearthed these days.
Logs in English please.
