The archaeological site of
the Oracle of Dodoni lies in an amazing beautiful scenery at the foot of Mt Tomaros and is considered as one of the most important sites in Epirus.
According to Herodotus, two black pigeons, the peleiades, flew from Thebes in Egypt; one of them landed in Libya, where the temple of Ammon Zeus was subsequently erected; the other one reached Dodoni, where it sat on an oak tree, Zeus's sacred tree, and spoke in a human voice, indicating the spot where the god's oracle was to be built.
By observing the rustling of the leaves on the sacred oak tree and the flight of the birds nesting in it,the priests interpreted the god's will. The oracles were based on the murmuring of the waters from the ancient spring and on the sound produced by bronze cauldrons standing on tripods around the sacred tree.
Originally, the priests of the oracle were only men, but priestesses, the so-called Peleiades, appear in later times. The priests and priestesses were famous for walking barefoot, never washing their feet, and for sleeping on the ground so as to be in immediate contact with the earth.
The most important buildings of the oracle were built during the reign of King Pyrros, in the 3rd century BC. The most impressive of them was the theatre, big enough for 18.000 spectators. This was also the period when the oracle reached the peak of flourishing.
During the Roman period the theatre was converted into an arena. Later, when Christianity gradually replaced the old religion, Christian basilicas were erected inside the sacred precinct, and the sacred oak was cut down.

Ο Αρχαιολογικός χώρος του
Μαντείου της Δωδώνης εκτείνεται σε ένα πανέμορφο φυσικό περιβάλλον κάτω από το όρος Τόμαρος και θεωρείται από τους σημαντικότερους στην Ήπειρο.
Σύμφωνα με τον Ηρόδοτο, δύο μαύρα περιστέρια, οι πελειάδες, πέταξαν από τις Θήβες της Αιγύπτου. Το ένα από αυτά έφτασε στη Λιβύη, όπου χτίστηκε ο ναός του Άμμωνα Δία. Το άλλο έφτασε στη Δωδώνη, στάθηκε σ’ ένα κλαδί μιας βελανιδιάς, το ιερό δένδρο του Δία, και μιλώντας με ανθρώπινη φωνή υπέδειξε το σημείο όπου έπρεπε να χτιστεί το μαντείο. Οι ιερείς, παρατηρώντας το θρόισμα των φύλλων της ιερής βελανιδιάς και το πέταγμα των πουλιών που φώλιαζαν στο φύλλωμά της, ερμήνευαν τη θέληση του θεού. Οι χρησμοί επίσης στηρίζονταν στο μουρμούρισμα των υδάτων της αρχαίας πηγής και στον ήχο που έκαναν με τον αέρα μπρούτζινα τσουκάλια πού στερεώνονταν σε τρίποδες γύρω από την ιερή βαλανιδιά.
Αρχικά οι ιερείς του μαντείου ήταν μόνο άνδρες, αλλά αργότερα έκαναν την εμφάνισή τους και ιέρειες, οι Πελειάδες. Οι ιερείς και ιέρειες περπατούσαν πάντα ξυπόλυτοι, δεν έπλεναν ποτέ τα πόδια τους και κοιμόνταν στο έδαφος, ώστε να είναι σε άμεση επαφή με τη γη.
Τα πιο σημαντικά οικοδομήματα χτίστηκαν στο χώρο από το βασιλιά Πύρρο τον 3ο αιώνα π.Χ. , περίοδο της μεγαλύτερης ακμής του μαντείου. Το πιο εντυπωσιακό είναι το τεράστιο θέατρο χωρητικότητας 18.000 θεατών.
Κατά τη Ρωμαϊκή περίοδο το θέατρο μετατράπηκε σε αρένα. Αργότερα, όταν ο Χριστιανισμός εκτόπιζε σιγά-σιγά την παλιά θρησκεία, Χριστιανικές βασιλικές χτίστηκαν στον περίβολο των ναών και η ιερή βελανιδιά κόπηκε συθέμελα.
