Geocache Description:

The city of Cornelia's Historic Train Depot is a train lovers delight. Lots of history can be found in & around this site. There are two restored cabooses to explore & many monument markers displaying historical information. This site is also home to Cornelia's famous 7ft tall monument, 'The Big Red Apple' & home to the Historic Train Museum. The museum does not need to be open for you to explore this historical train depot.

This cache is being placed in honor of two of my great caching memories. The first memory honors where it all began: I found my first cache here. The second memory honors my second cache find, which was a great multi stage cache, stage one started here. Ref: GC1797R The Depot Drop & GC24FK2 HC#6 Stay and See Habersham, both of these caches have now been archived. The historic Cornelia Train Depot was first built by the Southern Railway Company in the late 1880's, soon after the town was founded. The railroad depot was originally called Blaine Station for the Republican presidential candidate James Gillespie Blaine. When the first charter of the town was secured by the attorney representing the railroad, Pope Barrow, the name was changed to Cornelia in honor of his wife. The official date of incorporation was October 22, 1887. The original terminal was damaged in 1910 in a fire, and rebuilt in 1914 to its current appearance. This large passenger and freight station was once the home to two rail lines The Blue Ridge & Atlantic Railroad (also known as the Tallulah Falls Railway) and The Georgia Air Line Railroad, now known as Norfolk Southern. This depot is the symbolic and historic heart of Cornelia and in fact the town's first boundaries were set at one half mile increments in all directions from the depot. Today this depot serves as a railroad museum filled with relics from the days when the railroad ruled, it is also a great place to sit and enjoy the passing trains roll by. IN ADDTION, An extra refreshing place has been added near the rear parking area, fun for the kids and refreshing even for the adults. Check out the newly added Splash Pad. To schedule tours or for more information call 706-778-8585, open only on special occasions. *******PLEASE USE STEALTH WHEN SEARCHING, FINDING AND REPLACING THiS CACHE. It seems to be popular with the Muggles. X5 replaced :(
