Geocache Description:

One of five Grey Coast caches, which explore features of this historic Caithness coastline in North Scotland.

This is the fifth and final cache in the Grey Coast series. It is placed at a high viewpoint that gives excellent views of this grey coast. The term "Grey Coast" comes from the title of the book by local author Neil Gunn (1891 - 1973). A statue commemorating his works is to be seen at Dunbeath Harbour.

The view ranges along the cliffs to the isolated sea stack "the Needle" at Berriedale in the south, and across the moors to the mountains of Scaraben and Morven. Out to sea the production platforms of the Beatrice oil field are clearly visible, with two nearby wind turbines. There are plans to build over a hundred of these in the next few years if permission can be obtained.

The cache is on a quiet by-road, about one mile from the busy A99 trunk road, with off road parking. Cross this by- road to view the coast (the cache is best visited on a clear day!) from the heathery knoll, then cast around for an old roadman’s stone pit, now overgrown and shallow. The cache is somewhere on the rim of the depression, no need to go into the gorse bushes!

Once you find the cache treat yourself to coffee and home baking at the Waterlines Centre at Lybster Harbour if heading south; or the Whaligoe café at Ulbster, if heading north. Both have close associations with the herring fishing days on this historic Grey Coast.
