Legend has it that originally someone had painted "cheesehead country" on the overpass. But legend also has it that late one lazy Thursday night back in September of 1988, some guys sat around drinking a case of Old Milwaukee. It was the high school Thunderbird football team and it was the night before a big football game against their local rivals, Tomahawk. It was there, at the bottom of a sudsy 12 oz. curl that the idea was born; the need to intimidate the opposing team. And how better for a bunch of drunk jocks to intimidate people than through the written word. So Cory, who played both ways as a running back and linebacker, had a couple of his teammates hold his legs and lower him down over the side of the bridge over Highway 51. There in the dead of a moonless night was Cory. Dangling upside down 20 ft. above the roar of passing 18 wheelers, intoxicated and all the while laughing he spray-painted the infamous “T-Bird Country” on the bridge. Afterwards they all hopped back in their trucks to make their get-a-way and as they speed off into the night, lights off, down bearskin trail they unknowingly passed within a few feet of their school principal Norseen. Principal Norseen had been out on the trail taking his evening stroll and had spotted the familiar trucks. The next day at school, the principal gathered together a bunch of the boys in the locker room before the game and in a very stern voice he said “try and keep your vehicles off the Bearskin trail”. Most of the guys just sat there wondering what he was talking about but a few shot knowing glances of shock and horror at each other. As Principal Norseen walked away he gave Cory a wink and a nod and said “Now go get-em’!” That night at the game Cory and the rest of the Thunderbirds severely trounced Tomahawk and let them know that this… is “T-Bird Country!” The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to Steve Peterson of the Wisconsin DNR.
