Geocache Description:

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE, CLIMB OVER THE FENCE IN TO THE HOVERCRAFT LANDING AREA. PLEASE REPLACE THE CACHE EXACTLY WHERE FOUND SO THAT IT MATCHES THE HINT TO AVOID MUGGLE INTERFERENCE. YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A HOMEMADE CACHE.

The nearby Fun Fair has CCTV pointing at this location and Fair ground workers may appear and ask if you've lost something etc and then point you to the cache. The difficulty rating reflects the likely muggle presence, which may be very high due to the attraction of the hovercraft landing and taking off.

The beach that you are looking at is where Sir Alec Rose, a local greengrocer of Osbourne Road Southsea (by the side of the large hotel directly across the Common) landed here in 1968 after a single handed voyage around the world of 354 days on his small yacht, Lively Lady.

This site was also the place of public execution for Portsmouth and it was here that the last public hanging, drawing and quartering (for High Treason) in Great Britain took place on 24 Aug 1782 of one David Tyrie. At his trial in Winchester Tyrie, a Scotsman, was found to have been passing secrets to the French whilst working as a clerk in the Dockyard.
Tyrie was drawn from the Portsmouth town gaol to this place of execution on a wattle hurdle and it's recorded that he appeared calm as he read his bible on the journey. He continued to read at this spot whilst the executioner procured a rope from a fishing boat drawn up on the beach as he had forgotten his own rope and Tyrie was eventually hung.
The executioner, having pity for Tyrie, allowed him to hang for 22 minutes until he was dead and then beheaded him, cut his heart from his body and symbolically burned in front of him and he was emasculated, cut into quarters and finally buried in the pebbly shore. For Tyrie, however, the indignity was not yet complete. Sailors at the event immediately exhumed the four parts of his butchered body and hacked them into tiny pieces for distribution as very grim souvenirs.
