Near the Gates of Hell Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

EPAC: Stopped by to check on this one. When I pulled up it was obvious that a recent flood had compromised GZ. When I looked, I quickly realized the cache is gone, most likely floated a long distance downstream. I also noted a "No Trespassing" sign which I don't think was there before. Due to these facts, I have decided to archive this one. Thank you to those who made the effort to find it and so sorry to those that tried to look for it when it had probably floated away.

Geocache Description:

On a bright sunny day this place isn't so creepy. At night, driving this road is a bit more creepy. GPS reception is sometimes spotty back here. Cell phone reception is VERY spotty back here.

About 1/4 mile up the road is the site of the Downingtown Gates of Hell.

The Story of The Downingtown Gates of Hell
The Gates of Hell sat along Sawmill Rd., outside of Downingtown. The location got its name from a pair of wrought iron gates, that stood guard at the end of a long driveway leading up to an estate. The property consisted of a house, a swimming pool, and a garage. There is also a small lake near the end of the drive which is closed off by a rusty old fence. This lake can be seen from Sawmill Road.
This property was supposedly the scene of a gruesome murder/suicide that took place somewhere in the 1950's. It is said that a mentally disturbed man killed his wife and children with his shotgun, dragged their bodies down the long driveway and hung them on the top of the wrought iron gate. Then, he turned the gun on himself.
Many thrill-seekers drove to the gates late at night. It was said if you drove past the gates, your car would stall until it was outside the gates and back on the road. The even more daring would attempt to walk up the driveway to the house. If you do a search on youtube.com you can find a video filmed several years ago by a group that made this trek to the then still standing house. Those who went up to the house at night reported of being chased away by an unidentified group of people. Rumors of Satanic cults and/or the Mafia using the estate as a hideout ran rampant over the years.
Nowadays, the property is littered with NO TRESPASSING signs, and new houses have been built nearby. As for the gates, they are long gone, probably due to the late night visits by thrill-seekers. All of the buildings have now been torn down. There are now huge rocks at the end of the original drive.

This cache is a bit harder to find than the last one.  You will probably need a log removal tool.  Good luck.
