I published a series of caches following the Helena Valley Irrigation Distric Canal below the Regulating Reservoir. The Prequels follow the source of the canal from Canyon Ferry Reservoir to the Regulating Reservoir. If you are following this series in order, and have tracked the canal through the valley with me, you may be wondering what you are doing at this spot. Where is the water? At the cache location, you are standing nearly over the top of the tunnel that empties into the canal on the Bureau of Reclamation land whose corner you are now standing near. The large pile of waste material which you can see to the west, utilized as gravel by the agency, must be the result of the bore-hole for the water that came from Canyon Ferry Dam through the pipe you saw at the first cache. The property is posted against trespassing, but you do not need to cross the fence to access this cache. There are several nearby caches, some of which are very clever (and one of which foiled my original idea for cache placement here). Be sure to look at the canal as it nears Kier Lane, which will almost certainly be the way you exit this location, especially if you are heading to #3. The water seems to me to have a different character than the water that leaves the regulating reservoir, perhaps because it is coming out of the base of Canyon Ferry Dam, and is not like the surface water that flows off of the relatively shallow water in the regulating reservoir.
