Geocache Description:

The Summer Olympics begin on July 27, 2012, in London, England.  In their honor, we have created a series of caches to highlight the Olympic sporting disciplines.  We will release a new cache as the first medal is awarded in each discipline. In each cache, you will see a code for the Closing Ceremony cache.  The first 26 cachers who log all 26 sporting, Opening, and Closing Ceremony caches will win a special Olympic prize.

Spectators have always been enamored with watching others test their strength.  This Olympic discipline tests the athlete's ability to lift more weight than any other competitor.  A total of 260 athletes (156 men/104 women) will compete for 15 medals in 8 weight divisions for men and 7 weight divisions for women.   Each country can have no more than 2 athletes in any one event and no more than 10 athletes total (6 men/4 women).  Men's competition has been an Olympic sport since 1896 and women have participated since 2000.

There are two types of lifts used in each competition.  The Snatch lift requires the competitor to raise the weight bar from the ground to over their head in one movement.   The second lift is the Clean and Jerk.  For this lift, the athletes must first raise the weight bar to shoulder height, then over their head.  They have 3 attempts for each type of lift.  Failure to complete one of the Snatch lifts in three tries eliminates the athlete.  Feet must be in line to consider the lift valid.  The best of each lift is combined to give their overall results.  If a tie occurs, the lower weighing athlete wins.  Curiously, if they both weigh the same and lift the same amount of weight, then the one who lifted that weight first is the winner.   Guess there are some advantages to going first...

Cache is a decorated film canister.  Bring your own pen.

These cache-athletes are tired after all the heavy lifting...but they come away with the medals for their efforts!
