Geocache Description:

This cache was placed near where the old Arrowhead bridge connected to Wisconsin. The cache is being maintained by friends in Duluth. Also a huge thank you to navychief for the spot!

The old Arrowhead bridge was built in 1927 to connect Duluth, MN with Superior, WI. It was built of wood and had a draw bridge so that ships could pass. The Arrowhead bridge had two lanes to allow car traffic to pass back and forth. As a kid my family crossed over this bridge to get to Wisconsin several times each year. It just never felt that safe as our car rumbled over.

In 1984 - 1985 the Arrowhead Bridge was replaced by the "New Arrowhead Bridge" or the "Richard I. Bong Bridge" that serves to this day. This picture shows the old Arrowhead Bridge in the foreground and the new Richard I. Bong Bridge in the background.

When the Arrowhead Bridge was demolished, two small sections were left. Part of the highway was left in Minnesota and part of the bridge served as a fishing pier on the Wisconsin side. In the 1990s the section of highway on the Minnesota side was removed to restore wetland so all that remained was the section of bridge on the Wisconsin side.

In 2010, the remaining section of the Arrowhead bridge was removed since it was becoming unsafe. It was replaced with a new fishing pier (pictured below.)

When you search for this cache remember that you would be standing in the middle of a highway 30 years ago. If you look across the bay you will see a few gravel piles. The old Arrowhead Bridge was anchored to Minnesota soil just south (left) of the piles.

The cache is a spherical micro with a logbook. You will have to bring your own pencil. Please be careful with the container and please do not drop anything in the lake. Retrieval of a dropped item could prove difficult. Thanks for finding!
