Geocache Description:

Playground Microcache in SF's Richmond District

This relatively new and non-descript playground borders the Lincoln Park golf course and the Palace of the Legion of Honor. Taking a pleasant afternoon at the park, kids laughing, ocean breeze blowing in, it’s alarming to think that there are hundreds and possibly thousands of bodies beneath your feet.
Lincoln park was the former site of City Cemetery, one of the five big cemeteries that served SF in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This part of SF was remote, and not even originally part of the city- perfect for cemeteries. It was the first cemetery to be ‘shut-down’ as city made use of what was becoming valuable real estate.
The city made a show of moving the bodies down to Colma, but the ‘rumors’ that they didn’t get all of the remains aren’t rumors- over 800 bodies were found during the 1994 renovation of the Palace of the Legion of Honor, and for a long time, small bones would periodically surface on the Golf Course.
The cache is a micro, no room for anything but the scroll, and an attempt has been made to water-proof it- bring a marker if you got one!
