The Streaked Horned Lark is classified as endangered in Washington State and federally a species of concern. It is estimated there are fewer than 1,000 left.
Their habitat consists of wide open space without trees and few shrubs. Unfortunately, they are known to nest at or near airports. They are the most commonly reported species in regard to collisions with Air Force aircraft.
Ft. Lewis has thousands of acres of prairie grassland, the preferred habitat for these larks. Their largest artillery impact area happens to be home to Streaked Horned Larks along with two rare butterflies, Taylor's Checkerspot and Mardon Skipper, and an endangered gopher, Mazama (Western) Pocket Gopher. The military is working with The Nature Conservancy to protect these species.
Beginning in 2011 the Department of Defense funded a two year project consisting of wildlife biologist swapping eggs from Oregon's Willamette Valley for eggs in Puget Sound nests to increase genetic diversity.
