This cache is located in the Viles Arboretum located at 153 Hospital Street, Augusta. This is a wonderful 200 acre non-profit green space to explore a multitude of varieties of plants, trees and wildlife. Take the time to explore the Visitor Center and gift shop before or after your search. THIS CACHE HAS RECENTLY BEEN LISTED AS MISSING. CONFIRMED! IT IS NOW ACTIVE AGAIN. 5-7-22
The space shuttle Atlantis, carried some white-pine seeds on its mission from April 5, 1991 to April 11, 1991, as part of its many scientific experiments to see how weightlessness affects different living species. The State of Maine 4-H Club members planted these seeds in 1994 and it is impressive to think of the number of miles these seeds traveled in weight-less conditions before they arrived in Augusta. The seeds apparently did well in space, but, unfortunately, the trees fared less well on earth as they suffered some vandalism a few years back; however, they seem to be doing well now. Should you notice any suspected new vandalism, please notify arboreteum staff members. Please use care as you explore in and around the area for a 1 qt. Snap lock box, which includes a travel bug and some kids swag. If you have not already found the “Pig Pen Series” (GC18ZBJ) or “Arboretum” (GC93F3), scout those out as well. Congrats to motherlode2 for FTF!
