Geocache Description:

You are looking for a small ammo can placed out on the Heritage Nature Trail behind the Carl T Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center. Be sure to visit the museum (free of charge) and sign the visitors log. Make a note that you were here geocaching. (You do need to have a recreational passport for your vehicle to park at the Carl T. however.)

Wintergreen is a small shrub like plant that can grow to about 6" tall and has foliage year round. Mature leaves are dark green on their surface and lighter in color underneath. They appear to be rubbery and lustrious. The plant will have white bell shaped flowers in July/August, followed by red berries. It grows best in damp, but not marshy, humus rich soil in the shadows or partial shade. Wintergreen is a very cold hardy plant that can withstand temperatures as low as -35 degrees C.

Studies show that the North American Indians used tea from the leaves of the plant to treat Rheumatism. When the American Nationalists Boycotted the British tea during the American Revolution, they used Wintergreen tea as a substitute. American settlers would use the tea to cure Headaches, Muscle aches, and Colds. During the 1800's, American Pharmacologists discovered that the oil extracted through distilling the leaves had properties of Aspirin. (It is now known that the oil extracted through distillation is very potent and contains as much as 99% Methyl Salicylate, which is the basis for Asprin. One ounce of the oil is equal to about 171 adult Aspirin tablets.) Wintergreen was and still is used to some extent as a flavoring in candies, cough drops and toothpaste.
