Where the Railroads Almost Met Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

jjlseekers: Activity level on this cache has been very low, and I'm archiving it now. We will probably move the container elsewhere and create another cache in the area.

Geocache Description:

For railroad and history buffs - the hunt for this cache will take you along some fine old railroad grades.

Start your search for this at the Santa Fe Saloon on 5th Avenue. Head north, turn right at the Detour sign, and follow your coordinates. You'll see lots of historic mine ruins along the way. When you get to a merge, keep going - you will be on the Bullfrog Goldfield Railroad (BGRR) grade. As you head up hill, look to your left. That was the Las Vegas & Tonopah Railroad (LV&T RR) grade. They almost meet - near the cache location.

These 2 competing railroad lines were built in 1906 during the boom time of Goldfield. Realistically there was never enough traffic for 2 lines, but optimism was unbridled in those days. So, the BGRR line was built north to south (Goldfield to Beatty and Rhyolite) at the same time that the LV&T was built from south to north. From the geocache location, the BGRR grade is a few steps south. The shelf chiseled into the hill to the west was the LV&T grade.

You can drive both of these railroad grades for several miles - a great bit of history!

You're looking for an ammo can.
