Geocache Description:

This geocache is named for the late Russ Jolley, whose book "Wildflowers of the Columbia River Gorge" is the authority on the subject. It is located at the top of a hanging meadow on the South side of Cook Hill. The meadow has a good balsomroot display, and when the flowers are at their peak and there are hordes of people on neighboring Dog Mountain you are certain to have this meadow all to yourself.

You are looking for a metal box about the size of an ammo can. The approach to the cache is mostly by way of an old logging road and then a user trail that Russ Jolley created to bring others to enjoy the meadow. Follow the road up Cook Hill and at around 1,690' you will come to a definitive switchback in the road. You will see a cairn marking the start of a flagged user trail that will bring you to the meadow. A word of caution: there is poison oak on the old logging road here and there. The CO saw a rattlesnake. Longtrails saw a bear cub. Long pants recommended. Doubt you'll really need pepper spray though. The best route to the caches on the summit meadow is to go straight up from here. There's a decent flagged user route that will get you there. You will not need a parking pass along Cook-Underwood road.
