Geocache Description:

These caches are on some of the rural roads of Macoupin County. Enjoy the less traveled roads and see some unusual, interesting and historic places.

The cache has been placed in the Funderburk Cemetery

This small neglected Cemetery, which was established in 1850, contains 31 recorded grave sites.

John Funderburk was born in Germany in 1786. He migrated to the United States and initially settled on a plantation in South Carolina. He was a "Minute Man" in South Carolina during the War of 1812. John married Rachel Laney who was born in 1781 in South Carolina. They had a family of seven children.

The family moved West to Illinois in 1828 and built the second cabin in existence in Dorchester Township. No land had yet been entered on record in either Dorchester or Bunker Hill Township although within the following few years many others came. As the family was obliged to survive principally on game Mr. Funderburk became a highly regarded hunter. He was respected for his fine traits of character and did much to preserve order in the newly settled region, serving as justice of the peace and in other capacities, having more education than many of his neighbors.

True pioneers! - Rachel Funderburk died in 1857 and John Funderburk in 1870 their grave markers can still be found within the Cemetery.

Please be respectful of the surroundings.

There is no reason to disturb anything on, or around the headstones or grave markers.

The cemetery is open from dawn until dusk, which is the only time the cache is available. Please do not attempt this cache at night.

The container is a Camo Painted Bison Tube that holds only a log sheet.
