Auburn Demo Woodlot #12 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Cache-tech: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

Auburn Demonstration Woodlot

a cooperative series by XtremeTC, CoveSC & Dryland Sailor

Auburn Demonstration Woodlot is one of six forest management properties established by the P.E.I. Department of Environment, Energy, and Forestry. These woodlots are designed to provide woodlot owners, forest contractors and members of the general public with visible evidence of the results of proper forest management and help to increase public awareness of Island forests. Open to the public, they exhibit many interesting aspects of current forestry techniques, as well as information on natural history, Island history, wildlife management and forest ecology.

The Auburn Demonstration Woodlot is located on Route #213 near Fort Augustus and covers 59 hectares (147 acres). It was a working farm and woodlot when it was purchased from Damien Lynn in 1966. Since then, many of the old fields have either been converted to forest plantations or have reverted naturally to white spruce. The older mixed wood stands at the back of the property have been managed using a variety of stand improvement and harvest techniques.

A wide variety of forest conditions may be viewed within this woodlot by following the 1.2 kilometre walking trail. It takes under an hour to walk the trail as it wanders through old field white spruce stands, vigorous young plantations and natural wet land conifers. Descriptive signs, located along the sides of the trail, and numbered posts that correspond to information contained in the detailed brochure, available at the trail head, offer information on a wide variety of topics pertinent to Island forest conditions.

Some of the caches in this series are only available by hiking but most can be driven to with a vehicle with good ground clearance. In the spring or after heavy rains, a strong four-wheel drive vehicle with good ground clearance will be needed. In the winter, snowshoes or cross country skis will be a necessity. All caches are placed within 10 meters of a trail or road. Please take precautions against biting insects.

Three things make for a great geocaching experience:
safety, respect and fun.

As always, please take home your litter, leave only your tracks.
