Soccerkix and I love coming out to McCloud. We enjoy hiking, birdwatching, and we really love the fantastic Nature Center. While we were hiding this cache, which is located behind the Nature Center, and trying to decide what to call it, Kix froze...... his eyes got REALLY big, and he said "Mom!!! There's a BIG snake!" I glanced just to the left of GZ, and couldn't believe my eyes. He didn't look enormous, but he was a pretty good size, I would guess maybe 5 feet long. He layed across several tree branches and we watched him. He was so still, we began to wonder if he was possibly fake! I started moving the branch, and he still did not move. After about 20 seconds or so, he finally slithered a little further down the branch, then stopped. Kix and I decided to walk around to the other side of the tree so we could get a better look at his head. While I was trying to get closer to snap a couple of pictures, he suddenly retreated back into the tree, and started slithering up! THIS is when we realized how big he really was. As his body stretched out as he made his ascent up high into the tree, we determined that he was probably more along the lines of 7 feet long! We were pretty sure that he was a black rat snake, so we hurried into the Nature Center before they closed to show our pictures to the volunteers there that day. They did confirm that it was a black rat snake, and they said that he was probably the largest that they have seen to date!
This is one of the MANY reasons that we love McCloud and why we keep going back. The Nature Center is closed on Monday and Tuesday, but if you're here when they are open stop by and check it out! Enjoy your time here and may the force be with you!
